How To Replace Pull Cord On Ceiling Light

Replacing the pull cord on a ceiling light is a relatively simple task that can be completed in a few minutes. Here are the steps on how to do it:

1. Turn Off the Power

Before you begin, turn off the power to the ceiling light at the circuit breaker or fuse box. This will prevent you from getting shocked while working on the light.

2. Remove the Light Fixture

Once the power is off, remove the light fixture from the ceiling by unscrewing the screws that hold it in place. Be careful not to drop the light fixture.

3. Disconnect the Wires

Once the light fixture is removed, disconnect the wires that are connected to the pull cord. There will be two wires, one black and one white. Use a pair of pliers to twist the wire nuts counterclockwise and then pull the wires apart.

4. Remove the Old Pull Cord

Once the wires are disconnected, you can remove the old pull cord. Simply pull the cord out of the hole in the light fixture.

5. Insert the New Pull Cord

Take the new pull cord and insert it into the hole in the light fixture. Pull the cord through until it is about 6 inches long.

6. Connect the Wires

Connect the wires to the new pull cord. The black wire should be connected to the black wire on the light fixture, and the white wire should be connected to the white wire on the light fixture. Twist the wire nuts clockwise to secure the connections.

7. Reinstall the Light Fixture

Reinstall the light fixture on the ceiling by screwing the screws that hold it in place. Make sure that the wires are not pinched between the light fixture and the ceiling.

8. Turn On the Power

Turn on the power to the ceiling light at the circuit breaker or fuse box. Test the pull cord to make sure that it works properly.

Tips

  • If you are not comfortable working with electricity, it is best to hire a qualified electrician to replace the pull cord for you.
  • Make sure that the new pull cord is the same length as the old pull cord.
  • If the pull cord is too long, you can trim it to the desired length using a pair of scissors.
  • If the pull cord is too short, you can purchase a longer pull cord at a hardware store.
