How to Replace a Drop Ceiling Light Fixture

Replacing a drop ceiling light fixture is a relatively simple task that can be completed in a few minutes. By following these step-by-step instructions, you can safely and easily replace your light fixture.

Materials Needed:

  • New light fixture
  • Screwdriver
  • Wire strippers
  • Electrical tape

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Safety First

Before you begin, turn off the power to the light fixture at the circuit breaker or fuse box. This will prevent you from being electrocuted while working on the fixture.

2. Remove the Old Fixture

Locate the clips that are holding the old light fixture in place. These clips are typically located on the sides of the fixture. Use a screwdriver to gently pry the clips open and release the fixture.

3. Disconnect the Wires

Once the fixture is released, carefully disconnect the wires from the fixture. The wires are typically held in place by wire nuts. Use a screwdriver or wire strippers to loosen the wire nuts and disconnect the wires.

4. Prepare the New Fixture

Strip about 1/2 inch of insulation from the ends of the wires on the new fixture. Twist the exposed wires together and wrap them with electrical tape to create a secure connection.

5. Connect the Wires

Connect the wires from the new fixture to the wires from the ceiling. The white wire from the fixture should be connected to the white wire from the ceiling, the black wire from the fixture should be connected to the black wire from the ceiling, and the green or bare copper wire from the fixture should be connected to the green or bare copper wire from the ceiling. Use wire nuts to secure the connections and wrap them with electrical tape.

6. Install the New Fixture

Align the new fixture with the hole in the ceiling and lift it into place. Push the fixture up until it snaps into place. Make sure that the fixture is secure before turning on the power.

7. Turn on the Power

Turn on the power at the circuit breaker or fuse box and test the new light fixture to make sure it is working properly.

Tips:

  • If you are not comfortable working with electricity, it is best to hire a qualified electrician to replace the light fixture.
  • Be sure to turn off the power before working on the light fixture.
  • If you are replacing a fluorescent light fixture, be sure to dispose of the old bulbs properly.
