How to Install a Ceiling Light with Ground Wire

Installing a ceiling light with a ground wire is a straightforward task that can be completed in a few simple steps. Follow these instructions to ensure a safe and secure installation.

Materials You'll Need:

Ceiling light fixture with ground wire
Screwdriver
Wire strippers
Electrical tape
Ladder

Safety Precautions:

Before starting, turn off the power to the circuit at the electrical panel. Always wear safety glasses when working with electricity.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

Remove the Old Light Fixture: Unscrew the canopy plate and lower the old light fixture from the ceiling box. Disconnect the wires by unscrewing the wire nuts and pulling the wires apart.
Prepare the Ground Wire: Strip about 6 inches of insulation from the end of the ground wire. Bend the bare wire into a U-shape.
Connect the Ground Wire: Locate the green screw on the ceiling box and wrap the U-shaped ground wire around it. Tighten the screw securely.
Connect the Wires: Twist the black wire from the light fixture together with the black wire from the ceiling box. Securely wrap the connection with electrical tape. Repeat this process with the white wires.
Attach the Light Fixture: Lift the light fixture into place and align the holes in the canopy plate with the holes in the ceiling box. Attach the light fixture with the screws provided.
Turn on the Power: Go back to the electrical panel and turn on the power to the circuit. Test the light fixture to ensure it works properly.
