Installing a Closet Ceiling Light: A Step-by-Step Guide

Safety First

Before you begin, be sure to turn off the power to the room at the main electrical panel. This will prevent any electrical shocks or accidents during the installation process.

Gather Your Materials

For this project, you will need:

A new ceiling light fixture
Electrical wire (14-gauge or higher)
Wire nuts
Screwdriver
Electrical tape
Stud finder

Locate the Junction Box

Most closets have a junction box located near the center of the ceiling. This box contains the electrical connections for the light fixture. If you cannot find the junction box, use a stud finder to locate a ceiling joist and install the junction box at the desired location.

Disconnect the Existing Fixture (if applicable)

If there is an existing ceiling light, carefully disconnect the wires by twisting the wire nuts counterclockwise. Remove the old light fixture and disconnect it from the junction box.

Prepare the Electrical Wire

Cut a length of electrical wire long enough to reach from the junction box to the new light fixture. Strip about 1/2 inch of insulation from the ends of the wires.

Connect the Wires

Connect the black wire from the junction box to the black wire from the light fixture. Connect the white wire from the junction box to the white wire from the light fixture. Connect the ground wire (usually green or copper) from the junction box to the ground wire from the light fixture. Twist the wires together and secure them with wire nuts.
